FAQ

How do I go about making an appointment?

Simply ring the office on 1300 88 45 22 to discuss any questions or concerns you may have, and to organise a time and location that suits you. Sometimes you may need to leave a message, which we will respond to ASAP. We offer daytime and evening appointments. TOP

How long does a session last for?

Sessions usual run for 50-55 minutes, the ‘therapeutic hour’. Career development sessions are 90 minutes long. Occasionally, a longer session (around 80 minutes) is organised with couples. TOP

What can I expect in the first session?

In the initial session, your psychologist will ask a number of questions to get an understanding of the particular matters that have brought you to counselling. He or she will gather background information, discuss your expectations and establish objectives for the therapy in collaboration with you. TOP

How many sessions will I need?

That is really dependent on the severity and duration of the issue. Some relatively surface difficulties can be resolved in one or two sessions, other patterns and issues have been there a lifetime and so take longer to work through. Whatever you bring, the goal of all MRC consultants is to help you move through therapy in a time-effective manner and at a pace that is both comfortable and rewarding. The average length of the counselling process is a dozen sessions held over the space of a few months. TOP

Will talking to a psychologist help me? Is it worth the effort?

Counselling and psychotherapy do work! Whether it is support and understanding through a crisis, or bringing about deep fundamental change, ‘talking it out’ with a professional can definitely make a difference. Our society is becoming increasingly accepting of psychological therapy as more and more people experience the benefits. TOP

Is there something wrong with me that I can’t work it out for myself?

Many people feel weak or a failure when they seek professional help. On the contrary, the human mind is designed to protect us from painful experiences so no amount of ‘self-help’ will resolve certain problems. Allowing someone to see our vulnerabilities is an act of courage and strength, and in itself will help move us towards our potential. TOP
